Why did ASI select the current program partners?

To better serve our members, NASW Assurance Services selected a group insurance administrator, Association Group Insurance Administrators (AIGA), and group insurance company, The Hartford*.

One of the greatest benefits of having AIGA and The Hartford as our program partners, is our ability to provide improved group insurance benefits without increasing premiums.

*The Hartford is The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., and its subsidiaries, including issuing company Hartford Life and Accident Insurance Company.

What are the enhancements in this group insurance coverage?

Following are the various enhancements to the ASI group insurance program:

  • A Felonious Assault Benefit is added to our members’ term life and accidental death and dismemberment programs. At times, you’re inadvertently put in harms way as a social worker. If you’re a victim of an assault and are seriously injured or die, this new benefit provides you with an additional payment of up to $5,000;
  • A 10% Guaranteed Acceptance Inflation Guard Benefit for you, available every year for 10 years with our term life insurance program. Now, our term life insurance participants have the opportunity to increase your current benefit amounts by another 10% each and every year for the next 10 years guaranteed with no medical questions or exam provided you take advantage of the offer at the time it’s made.   • A Guaranteed Minimum Disability Benefit for Specified Injuries for our long-term disability insurance participants that specifies a minimum amount of time you must be paid for these covered injuries. This gives you the comfort of a guaranteed starting point – no hassle, no arguments;
  • Increased Term Life Maximum Coverage for your spouse/domestic partner from $220,000 to $407,000;
  • And, best of all — these enhanced benefits are provided at no additional cost to you!

What are the enhanced benefits for my spouse or domestic partner?

Our program includes even greater enhancements in NASW’s sponsored term life benefits for your spouse / domestic partner:

  • Your spouse / domestic partner is able to keep his / her term life benefits even if you were to die or discontinue your protection;
  • Your spouse / domestic partner may get NASW sponsored term life protection even if you have chosen not to take any yourself;
  • Your spouse / domestic partner coverage does not automatically include coverage for children saving money for those without children or with ineligible children over age 25;
  • And, we are working on improvements to your children’s term life benefits, as well.

If I’m not currently enrolled in either of the term-life, long term disability or accident coverage, can I apply for enrollment at any time?

Absolutely, simply review the insurance product information on our website. You will find links to get more information, how to enroll, or whom to call for any of our insurance products. If you have any questions about any of the group insurance plans offered to you, simply call 800-355-3869.

Why do you say the Billing System is “Better-Than-Ever?”

You can receive a separate bill for each of your insurance products so that:

  • You can schedule each of your payments to be either monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually;
  • You can have one of your insurances paid out of a business account and another from your personal account;
  • You can pay one quarterly and another, monthly, semi-annually or annually;
  • You can have one paid automatically out of your checking account and, with another, have a bill sent to you.
  • And, if you prefer, you can receive a single billing statement. Simply call your Customer Care Center at 866-591-8267.

What if I prefer to “Go Green?”

You can go completely green by choosing paperless billing and payment options. Your billing system provides both Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) and automated credit card payment options.

By choosing either of the electronic payment options, you will not receive any bills in the mail at all, and our environment will benefit. Even better, so will you. You’ll save yourself time and money. No more writing checks, licking stamps or mailing bills.

What is the My NASW Health Choices Program

NASW Assurance Services is now offering a one-stop health insurance shopping service to connect you, your family members and your clients with licensed health benefits consultants who can help you navigate the complicated and time-consuming process of finding and enrolling in a medical insurance, dental or vision plan just right for you.

We’ve partnered with Augeo Benefits, formerly Benefit Protect, to bring NASW members timely and knowledgeable assistance in navigating both public and private health insurance options, including options newly available through the federal and state exchanges under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). When you call, you can also receive help to determine whether you are eligible for a government subsidy towards your health insurance premiums. And typically, you can enroll right over the phone.

Simply call (866) 206-8509 to speak with a licensed NASW Health Choices Program representative Monday- Friday, 9 am – 9 pm Eastern Time/ 6 am – 6 pm Pacific Standard Time.

Once enrolled, you will have individual coverage directly through the insurance carrier. You will not have group health insurance through NASW or NASW Assurance Services.

Following your enrollment, you will still have access to the Health Choices Program representatives who can assist you with questions, policy renewals, or plan changes

Can I use the My NASW Health Choices Program to help my clients?

Yes, the My NASW Health Choices Program one-stop shopping service is available to you, your family members and your clients.

Am I eligible for health insurance even if I have a pre-existing condition?

As of January 1, 2014, under ACA most individuals are required to have minimum essential health insurance, and with limited exceptions you cannot be denied coverage. For those who have been uninsured or denied coverage in the past, you will have more options. For those who don’t obtain coverage, there may be penalties. Government subsidies will be available on health insurance premiums for those individuals or families who meet the government income criteria.

Important Dates and Deadlines:

    Open Enrollment begins October 1, 2013
    Coverage begins under ACA guidelines January 1, 2014
    Open Enrollment ends March 31, 2014

What is the government subsidy on health insurance, and who qualifies?

Some individuals and/or families meeting certain income criteria may qualify for a federal government subsidy or tax credit on health insurance purchased through the health insurance exchanges, also called the marketplace.

To see if you are eligible for a subsidy, contact the My NASW Health Choices Program at 866-206-8509. You will be asked to provide income information during the enrollment process, and a licensed health benefits counselor will help determine whether you are eligible, and if so, your subsidy or tax credit amount.

Where do I enroll?

Hundreds of call representatives will be on hand, ready to assist you in a knowledgeable and timely manner with health insurance, dental and vision insurance options.

What carriers and plans are available through the My NASW Health Choices Program?

Through the My NASW Health Choices Program, you will have access to major A or A-rated national insurance carriers, including Humana, Aetna, United Healthcare, and Assurant and many others. The public and private major medical program options and carriers are changing frequently due to health reforms underway, and options will vary by state.

However, you should have access to the same options, and possibly more options, in the private market, at the same costs as those available to you through the federal and state insurance exchanges. My NASW Health Choices Program representatives can help you compare the options available both in and outside of the exchanges.

How does the My NASW Health Choices Program differ from the state and federal insurance marketplaces and exchanges?

NASW Assurance Services has partnered with Augeo Benefits to bring you this one-stop health insurance shopping service. You can receive timely and knowledgeable assistance in understanding not only the private health insurance plans offered through the exchanges created under the ACA, but also private health insurance plans available outside of the exchanges and government programs that might be available, such as Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance. You can also find out if you’re eligible for a government subsidy towards your health insurance premiums, as well as cost-sharing subsidies. And typically, you can enroll right over the phone.

The My NASW Health Choices Program has more than a five-year track record of assisting NASW members with private options for major medical, dental and vision insurance, and is now able to assist NASW members across the country in finding and applying for health insurance options available through the federal and state exchanges that opened October 1, 2013.

Hundreds of licensed benefits consultants will be available to help you navigate the often complicated and time-consuming process of finding and enrolling in a medical insurance, dental or vision plan just right for you. You will not have to wait in line for someone to respond.

This program also comes with the additional support and advocacy of NASW Assurance Services, overseen by a Board of social workers like you, and whose staff are managing our program partnerships and can assist you.

Are there plans to expand NASW health and wellness offerings to NASW members?

NASW Assurance Services is developing a Health and Wellness Corner for NASW members, under which the My NASW Health Choices Program is available. In addition, ASI offers Life Line Health Screening services for NASW members and their families at a discounted rate, and is always looking to introduce new health and wellness products and services to benefit NASW members and their families.

Is this a discounted group health insurance plan for NASW members?

No, this is not a group health insurance plan, and there is no member discount. This is individual coverage between a major insurance carrier and you, the individual NASW member, and/or your family members. The coverage is not between you and NASW or NASW Assurance Services.

How much does a typical individual health insurance plan cost?

Costs will vary depending on your location, the level of benefits you select, and certain other factors. One of the benefits of this service is that it allows you to shop and compare rates for a variety of health insurance plans from a variety of carriers, and it gives you the ability to specify that your doctor be in your network, or for you to choose a higher or lower deductible depending on your needs.

Why go through the My NASW Health Choices Program when I can apply directly myself to a carrier, or through the federal or state health insurance marketplaces?

We’ve designed the My NASW Health Choices Program to make it a one-stop shopping experience. You will have access to knowledgeable and experienced licensed insurance professionals who already have a track record of providing NASW members quality customer service with private insurance options. Additionally, the benefits consultants will be able to assist you with private health insurance options as well as the mandated ACA options as they are available through the federal and state exchanges. You can also receive help in determining your eligibility for a government health insurance subsidy.

In addition to the personalized consultation and convenient shopping service it provides, another important benefit of going through the My NASW Health Choices Program is the advocacy and support of NASW Assurance Services for NASW members and social workers in a variety of ways.

What is Life Line Screening?

Life Line Screening provides a preventive health service that NASW Assurance Services has just begun offering NASW members as a new discounted member benefit under the ASI Health Choices Program.

Life Line Screening provides affordable, convenient, preventive health screening and medical testing that can help NASW members and their loved ones detect serious health problems (like blocked arteries, irregular heart rhythm, and aneurysms) for follow up with a physician or emergency room, or that can help allay the fears and concerns of healthy individuals worried they might have a serious problem, providing peace of mind.

In operation since 1993, Life Line is America’s leading provider of mobile health risk screening, with an excellent reputation in the general public and medical community.
Life Line Screening screens for: Stroke; Vascular Disease (such as heart attack); Peripheral Artery Disease; Arrhythmia; Carotid Artery Blockage; Atrial Fibrillation; Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm; Osteoporosis; Glucose; Total Cholesterol; and C-Reactive Protein.

Of the 900,000 people screened each year, Life Line Screening refers nearly 4,000 to their physician or emergency room for life saving services they might not otherwise have received until too late.

Although NASW members and their families are free to participate in the Life Line screenings as they choose, it’s always good to consult your physician beforehand or if your screening results indicate any sort of problem, for a recommendation on what is best for you.

Why is ASI offering the Life Line Screening Program for NASW Members?

We care about NASW members and are working hard to provide meaningful benefits for you that make your NASW membership even more valuable.

We’re aware that four out of five strokes occur with no warning, and that cardiovascular disease is our #1 cause of death and a leading cause of disabilities. The problem is that doctors, typically, cannot order diagnostic testing for their patients who are not exhibiting symptoms. We see Life Line Screening as providing a beneficial, potentially life-saving option for members who choose to use these services – particularly for those with inadequate health coverage who might be able to proactively avoid expensive, life-changing medical catastrophes.

In addition, if a member, or member’s relative, were to take these tests at a normal hospital, clinic or doctor’s office, the combined expense would exceed $1,000 and, perhaps $2,000, depending on which part of the country you live in. NASW and ASI believe this is a way to save our members money and help hold down the medical expenses of our country.

Does either NASW or ASI receive income from Life Line’s screening of our members?

Neither NASW nor ASI receives any revenue from Life Line Screening for this program to members; every available price savings is passed directly to you in the form of the lowest possible discount price available ($129) for the Stroke, Vascular Disease and Heart Rhythm Package, three of four major screening tests that that would cost upwards of $1500 if ordered by your physician.

ASI negotiated this special discounted rate for NASW members so that you and your family members (including parents) can save money on Life Line Screening services as a benefit of being a member of NASW.

And if this more affordable access to these services helps even one of our member social workers who work so hard to help others, we’ll feel we have made an important difference.

Is Life Line Screening available in my state?

Life Line Screening is currently available in the 48 contiguous U.S. states. Life line Screening is not currently available in Alaska or Hawaii.

Additionally, in northern most states where harsh winter weather can impact the travel of its mobile screening units, the majority of screenings are held only during the spring and summer months.

How can I check to see when and where the next screening event will be in my area?

How will I be notified about future Life Line Screenings coming up in my area?

In addition to periodically visiting the NASW Member website at www.lifelinescreening.com/nasw to locate and book screenings for yourself or your family, you will be notified by mail the month before Life Line Screening mobile screening units are scheduled to be in your area. The mailing you receive will include location and scheduling details and a phone number for you to call to book your appointment, if you wish.

Information about Life Line Screening is also available on ASI’s website at www.naswassurance.org and will be provided in our general marketing materials available at NASW Chapter conferences.

  • No disrobing is involved.
  • Accurate, Board-Certified Results. Those who read these results are all certified physcians, cardiologists, vascular surgeons and radiologists.
    Screening results are sent to all participants in 21 days.

Do NASW members truly benefit from a member discount? I think I’ve seen the $129 rate advertised in my local community to members of the general public.

Yes, NASW member discounted rate of $129 is for the Stroke, Vascular Disease and Hearth Rhythm Package, which is more complete in terms of determining the risk of stroke than the $129 Wellness Package sometimes promoted by Life Line Screening to the general public. The NASW member Stroke Package also includes the Atrial Fibrillation (heart rhythm) test. Someone found to have AFIB is 4-5 times more likely to have a stroke. Thus, the NASW member Stroke, Vascular Disease and Heart Rhythm Package includes better screening tests.

This more comprehensive Stroke Package is available to NASW members for $129 and to the public at $139. The $129 Wellness Package sometimes promoted by Life Line Screening to the general public would be $119 for NASW members.

Additionally, NASW members can add the Osteoporosis test to the Stroke Package at a significant discount – for $10 – if you choose – instead of paying the publicly offered price of $35. About 22% of women over 40 who are tested are found to have an onset of Osteoporosis.

Can my family members also benefit from my NASW member discounted rate?

Yes, NASW members are being provided this benefit to include members of their families such as parents, spouses and domestic partners, children, in-laws, etc.

What if I want to purchase my screening tests separately instead of a package?

You can certainly do that if you choose, although you can achieve cost savings by purchasing tests as a package if you need them. Purchased separately (not as a package), all individual tests are priced at $60 and the Osteoporosis test is priced at $35.

Your Stroke, Vascular Disease and Heart Rhythm Package includes four tests for $129, with an option to add the Osteoporosis test to check your bone density for only $10.

I believe that promoting elective screening tests can lead to unnecessary worries and testing for people who do not need them.

Health screening may not be the right option for everyone. However, ASI believes that offering it as a consumer choice at the best available member discounted price will be beneficial to some NASW members and could potentially help save a life.

We know this has been the case for many other individuals who have already used the Life Line Screening services and were able to follow-up with their physicians for life-saving services as a result, and have written testimonials about their experience.

I’ve heard that screenings can generate false positives leading to costly, unnecessary additional testing and medical procedures which puts stress on our health care system.

Yes, it’s possible in all medical testing to experience a false positive. But we understand Life Line Screening has a very good track record in this regard.

Doesn’t the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommed against some of these tests in younger individuals with no history of heart disease?

With regard to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force findings, Life Line Screening provides an alternative viewpoint that makes the case for the benefits of early screenings in allowing individuals to make healthy lifestyle changes based on their test results and significantly help reduce their risk of a future stroke or heart attack.

Why do I need professional liability insurance?

Professional liability insurance protects social workers if sued for malpractice. Social workers need protection from legal action due to negligent acts, errors, and omissions on the job and from frivolous lawsuits that can be brought even years later.

Without coverage, you could spend precious time and resources defending yourself, regardless of whether there is any merit to the claim. Professional liability insurance provides you with experienced legal defense and coverage for settlements or damages.

The NASW-Endorsed Professional Liability Insurance Program covers you for other specific risks, including supplemental liability for clients tripping and falling in your private office, and legal counsel for a licensing board complaint or administrative hearing.

Why should I choose NASW coverage for my professional liability insurance?

You can have peace of mind knowing that your coverage is provided by an organization that you trust and that cares about you. NASW’s-Endorsed Professional Liability Insurance Program is the ONLY program that includes the advocacy of our association. Members who purchase professional liability insurance through a different organization will not have the support and backing of NASW Assurance Services.

Do I need to be a member of NASW to apply for professional liability insurance or to renew my policy?

Yes, the NASW–Endorsed Professional Liability Insurance Program is only available to NASW members; social workers must be current members of NASW to participate in this program.

There are important reasons for this requirement. There is strength in numbers and your NASW membership allows NASW Assurance Services to manage all aspects of the program, making sure the benefits stay current to meet the needs of our profession and helping to keep costs low. Also, importantly, we are able to advocate on behalf of NASW members in the NASW-Endorsed program if they are unfairly denied coverage or renewal.

If I receive liability insurance through my employer/agency/school, do I still need individual coverage?

Social workers covered under the professional liability policy of their employer, agency or school also need their own individual coverage. Employer coverage does not necessarily protect you individually from risk and you may be liable for your own negligence. Employers may require you to reimburse them for damages they pay on your behalf, or their insurance may be inadequate.

Like it or not, large organizations such as schools and agencies may find it necessary to focus on their organizational needs first, and not on the needs of the individual social worker. For example, social workers covered by organizational policies are unlikely to be provided their own defense team to look out for their interests and careers. Your employer may also have the right to consent to settlement rather than defend your interests.

Also, if you leave your employer, it may be questionable whether you would still be covered under their policy. Purchasing your own professional liability insurance means you’ll still be covered, even if you change jobs.

Why did NASW and NASW Assurance Services choose to launch a professional liability insurance program?

NASW Assurance Services launched the new NASW-Endorsed program in September 2012. It includes enhanced benefits at lower costs, with the continued advocacy and oversight of NASW Assurance Services. We’re very excited about this program and are extremely proud to be able to offer this excellent coverage to NASW members.

What benefits and discounts do I have with the new NASW-Endorsed program?

The new NASW-endorsed program offers exceptional benefits at low costs, including:

What is a “Risk Retention Group” and what does it have to do with the NASW-Endorsed program?

The NASW-Endorsed program is structured as a Risk Retention Group (RRG), which is a liability insurance company created for the benefit of NASW members and owned by its insured members.

There are a number of advantages to the NASW RRG, including:

  • Oversight by a Board of Directors which is comprised of social workers and association insurance experts who always keep members’ interests in mind
  • Fully transparent finances and operations
  • Greater control on how the program is structured, permitting quick improvements

How is NASW Assurance Services able to offer enhanced coverage at discounted rates?

NASW Assurance Services and our partners have created a new program that offers improved coverage, benefits, and access while also providing NASW members with the best possible professional liability insurance at the most competitive rates.

Additionally, our NASW RRG Plan Administrator charges low commission rates, saving our program over a million dollars each year. These are real savings we’re able to pass along to you in the form of better benefits, new discounts, and lower premiums.

How much does professional liability insurance cost?

There are many variables that impact insurance cost, including the amount of liability coverage you choose and whether you work full-time or part-time. NASW Assurance Services works hard to ensure that members are provided with the best possible professional liability insurance at the most competitive rates.

How does NASW Assurance Services’ management and advocacy benefit policyholders in the new NASW-Endorsed program?

NASW Assurance Services’ staff has done the research and legwork needed to develop a new, high-quality, affordable program. We also manage the program to ensure that members receive excellent, caring customer service.

Importantly, we will advocate on your behalf if you’re unfairly denied coverage or renewal. The management and advocacy efforts of NASW Assurance Services might not always be apparent if you haven’t experienced issues in obtaining coverage or renewal directly through a big insurance company that reports to Wall Street and its corporate shareholders, but it can make a real difference. We also advocate on behalf of NASW member policyholders to prevent premium increases.

NASW Assurance Services also develops and provides in-person and online risk management workshops, tools and resources to help our members reduce their risk from lawsuits. Our Board members also offer risk management workshops at NASW Chapter meetings and other professional conferences.

Is the NASW-Endorsed program financially secure?

Yes, the NASW-Endorsed program is extensively reinsured and financially protected by top, “A” rated reinsurance companies, including Lloyd’s, London and Swiss Re, that go beyond the state insolvency guarantee funds, which are capped well below your policy limits.

The NASW RRG is an insurance company that meets all regulatory requirements of insurance regulators and is registered in all states. It is not self-insurance.

If I have a professional liability legal question or problem, who can help me?

Western Litigation, Inc. is the program’s legal partner and is a Fortune 300 litigation and risk management company. They staff our free Legal and Risk Management Helpline, a benefit of our program that allows you to get confidential legal advice based on your particular circumstances. Utilizing this counseling is not considered as filing a claim, and your confidential conversation will not be shared with anyone else, including the insurance company.

Should a claim arise, NASW member policyholders will have access to Western Litigation’s national panel of lawyers and staff, who provide legal defense, claims management, and general litigation oversight.
