About Risk Management

What is Malpractice?

Malpractice is a form of professional negligence.
“Malpractice is a deviation by omission or commission (action or inaction) from the standards of professional care which then results in injury [E.T. Negley, Innovations in Clinical Practice, 1985]

The best way to defend yourself against social work malpractice lawsuits is to prevent suits from being filed in the first place. In addition, it's prudent to obtain professional liability insurance and take other measures to improve your practice as ways of mitigating your liability risk.

"Good" social workers are threatened with suits everyday. And even if the suit is frivolous or your actions do not constitute professional misconduct, you must defend yourself. You need to prepare today, so the odds can be in YOUR favor.

To help social workers like yourself, NASW Assurance Services hosts a risk management resource section on its website, so you can concentrate on doing what you do best
